We are pleased to announce that DressageClinic.com's long time featured educator Charlotte Bredahl will be the USDF's clinician for the upcoming 2009 and 2010 USDF Adult Clinic Series. You can watch one of these exciting upcoming clinics on DressageClinic.com as well as Charlotte's many available training sessions particularly with her
wonderful young horse Westpoint (5 yrs. old) who finished third at the West  Coast Young Horse Finals in May of this year.
USDF will host one clinic in each of the nine regions over the next two years. Clinics will be open to eight riding participants(ages 22 and older) and auditors of all ages. Each rider will receive a 30-45 minute private lesson in a symposium style format. These adult clinics fulfill an important goal of USDF to educate all of the riding
public on the benefits of classical dressage. The adult clinics will appeal to the broadest spectrum of auditors and riders of all levels and ability.
Charlotte Bredahl was a member of the bronze-medal winning 1992 U.S. Olympic Dressage Team and has represented the USA in many international competitions. She resides in California and is breeder, trainer and dressage teacher. She is also a highly respected "S" judge and a new FEI "C" judge. In  this training session with Westpoint, Charlotte works through her  regular training routine.  Charlotte says Westpoint is the best young  horse she has ever started.  Westpoint has been competing at the FEI 5 year old classes and he is already qualified for the CDS  finals at 1st and 2nd level. In the preliminary standings for USDF Horse of the year he is 3rd in the country with a 71.3 median score at  2nd level. He has won the last 16 classes
he has competed in.  Charlotte owns his father Windfall CB and has owned Westpoint since he  was 6 months old.
In Part 1, as Charlotte begins this training session, she explains that she always begins her trot warm up on curved lines, circles, figure 8's, and serpentines as she is constantly trying to improve on suppleness both longitudinally and laterally. She gets her horse to bend on the circles and tries to get him to stretch down as
much as possible.  "On the curves", Charlotte explains, "I ride mostly from my inside leg to the outside rein, so I am always pushing him out a little bit."   It is inspiring to watch this pair as they energetically move forward with  rhythm being a main focus.
In  Part 2 Charlotte begins her canter work as she explains "The more you try to collect him at the canter, the more your leg has to keep telling him to canter, otherwise he will get confused and think you want him to trot. Most horses have a tendency to want to go
haunches in a little bit in the canter so you always have to work on that. You always want to work on straightness." In another section of this part Charlotte explains more about straightness, "rather than trying to move the haunches over, you need to move the shoulder to the
inside a little bit to line him up."
In Part 3, Charlotte and Westpoint begin an exercise in the canter and counter canter. She rides a canter half pass, then canter leg yield back, as she keeps Westpoint balanced and straight. At one point, after the canter work Charlotte breaks into sitting trot, slightly shortens the reins to get him a bit more underneath himself
establishing a confirmed connection as she moves  Westpoint forward and then bringing him back, demonstrating the use of only her seat. Westpoint shows a wonderful willingness to work through all these excercises  particularly the shoulder ins, haunches in and half pass transitions.
In Part 4, Charlotte continues at the sitting trot, doing an alternating half passes, into leg yields exercises. "This really reminds the rider to ride more from the inside leg than the outside leg.  In switching from the half pass to the leg yield, the position stays the same, it's just a difference in leg pressure" Charlotte
explains.
This is an important video to watch especially for those of you who are either interested in the development of youngsters or simply to improve your understanding of the basic fundamentals of being a better more educated rider. Charlotte Bredahl  explains mistakes that
a judge would see and  shows us what is needed to correct these errors. She knows exactly what the judges are looking for and she shares her expert knowledge with us. How fortunate are we to have the privilege to sit ringside and observe this very valuable training session.  We consider this training video vital for the development of every dedicated dressage rider working at any level.

The Dressage world has changed.
American rider Steffen Peters and Ravel are at the center of attention.
New Training Video Now Playing on

How does a rider with his horse continue the training after they become the center of the international dressage  world with victories at the 2009 World Cup and in Aachen Germany as well as top rankings at the Olympics.  The suspense built throughout the night at the 2009 Rolex FEI World Cup Final in the Thomas &  Mack Arena, and with only one American horse remaining in the competition, the crowd had to wait until the third to last horse in the ring. With $102,000 USD on the line and a Rolex watch, the competition was fierce.

Ravel, in first World Cup Final with Steffen Peters, rose to the occasion in a very difficult Freestyle. His flying changes and piaffe and passage were foot perfect, the movements were incredibly tough and the horse just thrived. He got better as the test went on and was rewarded with a mark of 84.95%. It was plenty for the win.

"It is fair to say, and I think I speak for Ravel too," said Peters. "It was magic soil in there. To share that moment in time with the most amazing dressage fans in the world is an incredible feeling. It hasn't quite sunk in yet."

Owned by Akiko Yamazaki, Ravel, an 11-year-old Dutch gelding, won the Rolex Grand Prix on Friday afternoon, the first time an American has ever won that competition.

"Ravel has an amazing mind," said Peters. "I honestly didn't have to push him. Tonight I could ride him a little more sensitively, he was with me so much. Naturally he's a very, very solid horse. He was extremely confident when we schooled, so I knew he wasn't too bothered by the atmosphere, I can't take credit for his mind he was born like that. I'm one of those really lucky guy who gets to ride a horse like that."

Fourth in the Olympic Games, Ravel has continued to improve and had beautiful piaffe half pass at the end of his test, showing his strength and concentration. The transitions were flawless and the crowd were rewarded for their patience for their hero. He changed his music from the Games, but the basic choreography stayed the same.
"We worked on the timing," said Peters. "We changed the trot music, it had an Asian theme in Hong Kong and I didn't think that would be suitable for Las Vegas. We changed it to Coldplay Vida la Vida."
